Search engines are no longer the only front door. A growing share of buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for recommendations, and never see a results page at all. If your brand is not part of that answer, you are invisible to them.

What GEO actually is

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your content easy for a language model to retrieve, quote and attribute. It overlaps with SEO, but the success metric is different: you are optimizing to be cited, not to be clicked.

Four differences that matter

  • Unit of value. SEO rewards the ranking page. GEO rewards the extractable passage.
  • Query length. Search queries average three or four words. Prompts run to full sentences with context and constraints.
  • Competition. A results page has ten slots. An AI answer typically names two or three sources.
  • Freshness. Models lean heavily on content they can date and verify.

What actually moves the needle

Answer the question in the first two sentences. Models extract the passage that resolves the query fastest. Long introductions get skipped.

Use real numbers and name your sources. Cited claims with attribution are far more likely to be reused than vague assertions.

Structure ruthlessly. Clear H2s, short paragraphs, and lists give the model clean boundaries to quote from.

Build entity consistency. Your company name, description and category should read identically across your site, LinkedIn, directories and any structured data. Models resolve entities by cross-referencing.

Publish things only you can publish. Original benchmarks, regional data and first-hand results have no substitute in a training corpus.

How to measure it

Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask, once a month, and log whether you appear. Then watch referral traffic from chat.openai.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics. It is crude, but it is a baseline — and most competitors have none.

The takeaway

GEO does not replace SEO. The technical foundation is the same. What changes is the target: you are writing to be quoted by a machine that will summarize you to a human who may never visit your site.
